Modular Headphone Amplification, Engineered for the Long Term

Description

Modular headphone amplifier with ARAY-inspired circuit topology — dual headphone outputs and optional DAC module. The Drachenfels is Lehmannaudio's versatile entry-level headphone amplifier, combining premium circuit technology with a clever modular architecture. The analog stage delivers 12dB of gain via an ALPS Blue Velvet potentiometer, with ultra-low noise performance (SNR >85dB, THD <0.006%) ensuring a transparent and fatigue-free listening experience. Its modular rear-panel design means the unit can be upgraded as digital standards evolve — Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and Bluetooth modules are available. The Drachenfels also functions as a line-level preamplifier with variable output, making it a flexible hub in any desktop or nearfield system. Dual Neutrik headphone outputs and gold-plated RCA connectors complete the specification. Dimensions: 160×120×43mm; weight: approx. 0.5kg.

Technical background

The Drachenfels employs a Class A/B discrete amplifier circuit with dual independent output stages, optimised for driving a wide range of headphone impedances. Its defining feature is a modular architecture — the circuit boards and front/rear panels can be swapped without replacing the chassis, allowing future digital inputs or circuit upgrades to be added as needs evolve.

Design story

Taking its name from the famous hilltop near Bonn, the Drachenfels was designed at Lehmann Audio's Cologne facility around the belief that audiophile amplifiers should grow with their owners. The modular concept emerged from two decades of phono stage and headphone amplifier engineering — a practical answer to planned obsolescence.

Best for

Entry-level audiophile headphone listeners wanting transparent, neutral amplification in a compact desktop form; students and first-time separates buyers Desktop headphone enthusiasts who value longevity and future-proof upgradeability over disposable electronics Desktop headphone amplification; home office reference listening; modular upgrade path for long-term ownership
